The Resurgence and Power of Subtle Science Fiction

I had the amazing opportunity to guest post on File 770, the Hugo-winning fan site dedicated to all things science fiction this week.  I discussed SFF's shift in tone to focus on more subtle story telling, how it is powerful, and why we're seeing it now. Thank you so much to Mike Glyer for passing the mic!
Science Fiction Fantasy as a genre is known for tackling massive scopes and complicated settings, from Blade Runner’s seedy cyberpunk cities to the galactic warfare in Ender’s Game. In the past decade, however, sci-fi has undergone a tonal shift from action-packed pages and explosion-filled screens to creeping subtlety. While blockbuster action films and space marines are still fun fan favorites, focus has shifted to reflect the audiences’ deeper understanding of our own world–and how it inspires SFF world building. ...read more

A Thunderous BEginning, A Cataclysmic End

It's here!

Blood and Mercy is out in the world! What a journey, eh? For the better part of a decade, this series has been my main creative focus. These characters have carried me through school, divorce, death, and disability. I'm so happy to finally be able to share this final piece with you, and show you what's in store for my reluctant, gay, teenage god, and my nerves-of-steel, Deaf general.

I'm keeping the launch price at 3.99 for just this weekend, and if you haven't checked out the Blood of Titan's world yet, you can start with Smoke and Rain (on sale now!) or begin with Keplan and Rih's story in Madness and Gods.

Saving the world may have doomed them all

Keplan reels in the wake of grief and guilt at the blood on his hands. Outside the city walls, however, winter grows fiercer and droughts longer. Alea reforged the fractured world twenty years before--so why is it withering before his eyes? Then, just as he masters being a monarch, a prophet arrives spouting scripture about a One True God. Keplan’s own mother killed the last gods, yet this one matches his description perfectly--and its wrath is about to fall upon Athrolan.

Isolated within the same cold, marble walls as Athrolan’s murderous king, Rih struggles to plot her rebellion leagues away from everything she has ever known. With an unexpected ally, she may have finally found a way to the Mirikin Hetmir--until tragedy strikes. With religious fanatics at their walls, blight in their fields, and a king floundering from addiction, Athrolan spirals out of control.

Now Rih must choose between a mad king’s life and her own revolution.

Hope you enjoy and I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Surrender Isn't Giving Up: Unafraid Podcast

A few months ago I jumped onto Jae's Unafraid podcast to discuss my journey through being queer, and the strange dual dysphoria that comes from being disabled and genderqueer. It's much more autobiographical than many of my other interviews and touches on how I moved from a genderless ball of rage to a place of peace.

I hope you'll take a listen and reach out if you have respectful questions or feel the same. Love to all my queer family during Pride, and especially now, as our rights are threatened.
